The origin of the name of Hatteras has comes from two sources. English explorers mapped
and charted the islands later, and a 1585 English map refers to the island as Croatan Island.
John White’s map of 1585 first names the cape as “Hattorask.” The name “Hatteras” is an
English translation of a Native American word that meant area of sparse vegetation"

Hatteras Attractions
There are two lighthouses in the area shining their light into the waters of the “Graveyard of
the Atlantic”. The Hatteras Lighthouse also known as “America’s Lighthouse” with its black
and white swirled stripes it the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. It stands
vigilant over the dangerous Diamond Shoals area, where the cool Labrador Current meets the
warm Gulf Stream creating sea swells and shifting sandbars.
The lesser known black and white striped Bodie Island lighthouse is found among the pine trees
and marshes is fabled to be so named because of the many bodies that were found along its
shores washed up from shipwrecks.
The Buxton Woods is a 3,000 acre maritime forest with 7 miles of a rustic nature path winding
through canopy of live oaks. A stable nearby offers horseback rides on the beach or through the
woods.
Frisco Native American Museum and Natural History Center. Native American artifacts are
commonly found on Hatteras Island today, especially in Buxton and Frisco the Native
American culture is preserved and displayed in the form of artifacts and exhibits. Galleries are
filled with art, sculpture, jewelry, pottery and there is a gift shop.

Hatteras Recreation
Hatteras is a water lover’s paradise. Surfing, Kitesurfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing,
kayakers, standup paddle boarders, scuba diving and snorkeling are among the most
favorite things to do. The area between the towns of Buxton and Avon, known as
Canadian Hole provides perfect conditions for windsurfing, kitesurfing and kiteboarding.
In the spring and fall windsurfers from upstate New York and Canada frequent the area

and giving the area the nickname. Waters in the Pamlico Sound are shallow in this area
and warm and perfect for families.
Fishing in Hatteras

The best fishing on the east coast can be found in Hatteras. Fishing on Hatteras Island can be done from
the surf, piers, on offshore charters, and inshore charters. A variety boats in all sizes are available at half
or full day rates. Pier fishing from Hatteras Island Fishing Pier in Rodanthe and Avon Fishing Pier can be
done from 6am to 12am. Popular fishing spots such as Cape Point in Buxton attract fisherman from
all over North Carolina and is known as one of the best fishing beaches on the East Coast. Teach’s
Lair is a full service Hatteras marina on the southernmost point of Hatteras Village and is the closest point
to the Gulf Stream. Tuna, dolphin, wahoo, blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, flounder, trout, sea mullet,
pompano, bluefish and drum and striped bass are caught at various times of the year on Hatteras Island.
Anglers flock to Hatteras Island in the fall, particularly in the peak weeks of October. Local Hatteras tackle
shops can be very helpful to visitors needing information.
